In a new initiative that is being funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme, a group of scientists, engineers and IT specialists have teamed up to provide knowledge transfer to farmers and other decision makers in the food and feed chains. Using smart technology available on phones and tablets, decision-making tools will be made available to the agricultural and food communities to guide them in taking the most cost-effective actions to minimise fungal infection and mycotoxin formation.

The worldwide impact of this scourge on human and animal health, on the livelihoods of subsistence farmers and the balance sheets of multinational trading companies, and even on humanity's environmental footprint, is incalculably large. For a mere EUR 5 million, an international consortium based in Europe hopes to make a meaningful dent in this staggering problem.
A four-year, €5m backed EU project is looking to create a cloud-based platform that provides real-time, customized advice about mycotoxins in order to achieve crop contamination reductions of between 20 and 90%.
